Once released, he settled permanently in London and later in Lambeth, finding an excellent living as a doctor, despite continual harassment from the orthodox medical community. Traister argues that there is little evidence to support the calumny heaped on him by his contemporaries in Jacobean England and by subsequent commentators.
Primarily a Galenist, Forman was amenable to experimentation, ultimately incorporating Paracelsian drug therapy into his practice.
Traister often compares Forman to John Dee, the famous Elizabethan magus with a penchant for alchemy and books, in his willingness to practice theoretical rituals of magic and to summon spirits. Farsighted as a practitioner, Forman eclectically combined the arts of physick and surgery; moreover, because he lacked lawful access to an apothecary, he grew and mixed his own herbal remedies.
Moreover, he was not just a local practitioner; his patients came from many neighborhoods and from different classes. His casebooks and manuscripts recount manifold symptoms and diagnoses, which Traister conveys in their sometimes-impenetrable original wordings. Judith Cook also reveals his private life, deciphering, for the first time, his intimate coded diary detailing all his law cases and battles with the establishment and particularly his hectic sex life, a record of promiscuity as vivid as Pepys or Bowell. One of his affairs was with Elizabeth Lanier, perhaps the 'Dark lady' of Shakespeare's sonnets.
